The aim of the course is to provide students with a broad based understanding of the principles and techniques of Corporate Finance and applying them to the main decisions faced by the financial manager. Much of the underlying theme of this course is grounded in real world applications where we would bring to our class discussions, corporate decision-making considerations that financial managers make. The concepts are immediately applicable to all firms, large and small, privately run or publicly traded and involved in any industry – whether manufacturing, merchandising or services.
GLOBAL LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students will be able to understand the principles and techniques of corporate finance. Students are exposed to a number of financial management concepts that practitioners in the field use and apply.Lectures and seminars will involve real world data and scenarios, focusing on how financial managers make investment, financing and dividend decisions in a context of a global competitive business environment.
- Personal Responsibility (PR)
Students will learn how to express their own viewpoints and reconcile these with others’ and the existing practices in financial management. They are expected to take personal responsibility for cases and assignments and to express, support and defend their own viewpoints. Students will be able to evaluate and discuss the challenges of issues relating to social responsibility, corporate governance and ethical and professional behavior arising from the recent financial transactions and media coverage.
- Systems and Strategic Thinking (SST)
Effective financial management is integral to value creation within companies. Students will be able to think in terms of the capabilities and limitations of financial management tools and techniques and use the information produced by these systems for strategic decision-making.
- Teamwork and Cooperation (TWC)
During class and assignments, students will be expected to cooperate and work in teams. Students should be able to work harmoniously with students of various nationalities and be capable of harnessing the diversity advantage in viewing issues and problems with a different, if not, international, perspective.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand time value of money concepts
- Recognize the various features of stocks and bonds, and determine the values for them
- Understand the value drivers of stocks and wealth creation for shareholders
- Utilize various capital investment techniques in the evaluation of capital investment decisions
- Determine long-term capital financing needs and design a suitable capital structure for a firm
- Manage the finances of an organization efficiently and effectively in order to achieve the organizational objectives
About the lecturer
Joy Chan possesses vast experience lecturing and developing undergraduate and graduate courses on Corporate Science, Investments, Mergers and Acquisitions, Corporate Restructuring and Valuation in western universities all over the world. Joy has been consistently been rated excellent in teaching methodology by students and peers, and more recently, by an independent trained assessor for ISO 9000 certification.
In addition, Joy also conducts executive education training, is an in-house trainer on Corporate Restructuring and Valuation, and Project Financing courses at prominent Austrian Banks, and supervises graduate and undergraduate thesis in corporate finance and risk management.
Prior to lecturing, Joy held positions in the administration of Singapore, at first as a tax officer and then as Assistant Director at the Ministry of Trade and Industry. She has worked and travelled all through the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia in an effort to spearhead various economic and financial initiatives that assist Singapore companies to place a foothold in the emerging markets of the world.
